Yet another night has passed and your baby has managed to keep you up all night to the point that you feel like the living dead.
Just the thought that you have to go into work literally brings chills down your back as you have another crazy day ahead and know that no matter what you do, there is nothing that can be done about it.
If this sounds like you, then I’m here to tell you that you are wrong. And not wrong for the reason that you are trying to do the best that you can, as that’s a great thing. But you’re wrong about thinking that there is nothing that can be done.

Learning how to get baby to sleep in a crib requires a change
Einstein once said that if you do the same thing over and over, and expect a different outcome. Well, that would be the first sign of insanity. And to be honest you’re probably feeling insane with all the lack of sleep you’ve been getting.
For me and my partner, this was a huge problem that led to us falling out on several occasions. And because I work night shifts on the weekends, I couldn’t even sleep in the same room as her and the baby as it would affect my work on the nights after.
Due to all of this disruption, our relationship was not doing so great and so we set out to find a solution t fix this problem as soon as possible. And to my surprise, we were able to fix it. Whilst it’s still a work in progress, I can definitely 100% say that its a lot better than it used to be.
And with baby getting older, and us getting wiser, things have turned out to be a lot better than it was. So stick around to find out exactly what we have done to help our baby to sleep in a crib at night. And I hope that from reading this you can leave well equipped with the knowledge and the tools to do the same for yourself too.
What game plan do you need to have to make this work?
Now, I know that you have already heard all the usual things that can be found on every other site on the internet.
Such as getting a routine or use a pacifier, but what if you don’t want to use a pacifier and you already have a routine?.
As I know for me and my partner we already have a strict routine with the baby and this still did not fix the problem. And when it came to pacifiers, whilst they are a great option for soothing, my partner decided that it was going to be an option for our baby.
I think to say the least it is more of a personal thing than a professional reason. But I wasn’t to keen on them myself as it can cause damage to the teething later in life if used for too long.
The way you need to be thinking is more along the lines of imitating the womb. By thinking in this way, your actions will then later align with what the baby needs in order to sleep comfortably. In the following section, I will be going over why your baby may be staying up at night in the first place, and then what steps you can take in order to fix it.
By doing this, you should be able to finally get back to a good nights sleep and start to socialize and have a normal life again. Not to say that it isn’t all worth it, but things can really start to get irritating when you can’t get in a good nights sleep.
And by identifying the problem, it will then make it a fair bit easier to create a solution. And near the end of this post, I will be sharing some recommended resources that you can use to fast track this process and help your baby to sleep in the crib if all else fails.
What causes a baby to wake at night?
There are several reasons o why your baby may be waking up at night. And to go through each I have listed out some of the most common reasons below:
- Bad routine
- Sleep Cycle
To better help you understand each of this subject, I really want to drive home each of these points. So if we discuss the first problem being:
This is usually the case for most babies getting up through the night as we can usually just go with the flow as parents. Now I don’t mean having a random time for each given day. But more on the point of checking how many days you have actually stuck to the plan.
To often, we can get caught up in our day to day activities and forget how it is to stick to a good routine. Now whilst I said that routines are commonly found as a suggested solution.
It cannot be overlooked as it is one of the most important factors in order for your baby to sleep. So make sure to have a good routine in the house in order to rule it out as a potential cause for the lack of sleep.
This can be a great way for helping your bay to soothe themselves to sleep. But when it falls out, all hell can break loose.
Some babies prefer to be sucking all the time, so the moment they are aware that they arent can result in waking and baby crying in sleep.
I would personally recommend that if your baby is still under 6 months of age and this is the cause of the problem, that you stop using a pacifier all together in order for them to go to sleep.
The reason I say under 6 months of age is due to the fact that when babies get any older than that, it can be very difficult to suddenly change things.
In and around 6 months of age you may notice that little one’s bite has started to get little sharper than usual. And that would be completely normal, as from around this age your baby will start to develop their first set of teeth.
When this starts to take place, there is no doubt about it that there will be some levels of discomfort. This can result in baby waking up several times throughout the night, which may be disruptive for you, but completely worth it when you see them smile.
A great way to reduce discomfort from teething would be to use a teething ring to relieve your babies gums during the day.
You may find that during excessive growth spurts your baby tends to wake up a little more than often. This was the case with my baby as he would get up randomly throughout the night baby crying in sleep and then just go straight back off as soon as I put him to lay down.
I read an article that said this can happen from a growth spurt at 3 months and right on the button he was just 3 months and 2 days old when it happened. And it continued on for a few days but then settled down in the following week after.
Either way, when your baby is going through a development process, it can be hard to get them to sleep consistently at night. But by using some of the steps in the upcoming sections, you should be able to get through this period just fine.
As you may already know there are different sleep cycles that your baby can fall into. So when he or she is sleeping at first they are usually in a lighter stage of sleep. Within this time, things such as hunger and discomfort due to temperature or noise can easily wake your baby time and time over.
To give you a guideline of how many times a baby should be waking at night during the first few months. Well, the average number is 3 times.
So that means if your baby is waking up several times throughout the night for feeding or just to go back off. Well, that’s pretty normal but there are ways to reduce it that I will share with you shortly.
My Top 5 steps for helping baby to sleep
So the 4 different ways that I have prsonally found to be the most effective for getting my baby to sleep are:
- Controlling the day before the night
- White noise
- Put your baby down when drowsy but awake
- Changing contents in the crib
Each of these topics warrants their own space, so I will break each of them down for you and provide actionable steps on how you can implement each of them today.
Controlling the day before the night
This is a major fail by most parents as it easily overlooked for the most part. Whenever you are experiencing a problem with sleeping at night, then the first place you should look is back on the day before. If you find that you are giving baby excessive amounts of sleep during the day then it quickly becomes very obvious why they are not sleeping at night.
When I talk about controlling your day before it is meant by making sure that you are managing the time your baby is sleeping well. Now by no means does this mean you should be starving them of sleep as that would be the wrong thing to do?
But maybe you could rethink putting them down several times throughout the day just because you are feeling tired and want them to sleep. Whilst napping is important for both of you to get, it is also just as harmful to overdo it and cause disruption at night.
So the idea here is to make sure that you keep some kind of a balance. And by doing so it should give you a noticeable change in the number of hours your baby will remain asleep at night.
Whilst there are many other ways that can work very effectively for putting your baby to sleep. This has to be at the top of my list, and the reason is that it is something that I completely overlooked in the first couple months of my sons birth.
Honestly, I never thought that by wrapping him up in a blanket he would go off sound to sleep with no wake but for food.
The other thing was that my partner was not to keen on putting our baby into the blanket as she was worried about it covering over his face.
But with the right research, I was able to find a safe technique in order to solve this problem which I still use to this day. I will share that with you in just a moment too.
Swaddling has been around for many years and when done properly it can help your baby to feel safe and secure at night. Resulting in them going off sleep quite comfy and relaxed through a majority of the night.
So the big question is how do you swaddle your baby the right way?

As you can see from the video you are simply imitating the womb or creating that type of environment for your baby to feel comfortable. In doing so you are making your baby feel relaxes and most importantly safe which will then result in a good nights sleep.
A common myth or household practice to be more precise s that you should be very quiet for your baby to sleep. But when your bay is in the womb they are constantly being moved and hearing noises even whilst asleep.
So the more you take a realistic approach, then the more your baby will fall into an outside world day to the daily sleep cycle.
The fact that white noise is so easily available still shocks me up till now. It is surprising how effective this really is but I can say that it doesn’t work the same with every baby. The idea behind the white noise is to simulate the sounds that a baby would hear whilst in the womb.
So if we go back to the point I made earlier, you can see now that everything ties into the point of creating an environment that imitates the womb for your baby.
The exact white noise that I use for our baby is called “happy baby white noise”. And the funny part is whenever my baby tends to start crying and then kicks up a fuss. I play this white noise and then before I can blink he is dead silent.
At first, I found it kind of scary with how it was doing it as I wanted to make sure it was totally safe to use. But that was just due to my lack of understanding and to be completely honest I even used it last night with him at 4 months old.
And it still works like a magic pill, he just goes straight into a relaxed position as soon as he hears the sound.

Put your baby down when drowsy but awake
This tip was taken from a guide called baby sleep miracle that I purchased some time back to help my baby to sleep in his crib. The idea behind this is to let your baby learn to soothe themselves.
I highly recommended that you try this first thing in the morning or the last thing at night when your baby is due for a nap. It may take some time, but by teaching your baby to soothe themselves.
It will save those night when he/she wakes up and doesn’t want to go back off until you put him/her back in. This will not stop them from waking up at night, but will instead help your baby to sleep through the little wakes that might usually cause them to wake.
You will need to be patient when testing this out as every baby is different and some may take to this faster than others. The important part is that you see it through and work on making this a new routine.
Changing contents in the crib
Now the reason I left this till last is that I feel that it does not have a big effect on actually helping your baby to sleep. It can help to make the surroundings a little more friendly for them to sleep in but it’s not always going to do the trick.
So before trying this make sure that you have exhausted all other options first. If you find that when you changed your baby form a Moses basket to the crib that their sleep started to get rough.
Then this may be an option that you look at before some of the others listed above. The reason being is because when you change a sleeping environment for a baby it can take some getting used to before they get back into a good sleeping routine.
I would know from first-hand experience as this is something that baby Romeo has been giving us trouble with not that long ago. It all happened when we changed the Moses basket to the crib, and by looking at it, I could see how empty to crib looked to the basket too.
